To see a fairly straightforward example of how networked parts of the story function, click on window, turn to it, then click horizon and look out. If other boats are visible, these represent others reading the story online at the same time you are-- you might consider the faraway lit up windows to be open browser panels on other readers' computers. If the sea is empty ("mirrored"), you are alone.
Note: if the page is opened in multiple tabs in the same browser, the story will consider each a unique reader (albeit an unusually passive one).
